Darjeeling

The sunrise over the Himalaya from here has become a major tourist attraction, with hundreds of jeeps leaving Darjeeling for Tiger Hill every morning at 4 am. To watch the dawn light break over a spectacular 250km stretch of Himalayan horizon, including Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8501m) and Makalu (8475m) to the far west, rise early and jeep out to Tiger Hill (2590m), 11km south of Darjeeling, above Ghum.


 


 

This prestigious mountaineering institute was founded in 1954 and has provided training for some of India’s leading mountaineers. Within the complex is the fascinating Mountaineering Museum , with fascinating detail from the 1922 and 1924 Everest expeditions which both set off from Darjeeling. Look for the Carl Zeiss telescope presented by Adolf Hitler to the head of the Nepali army.


 

This zoo, one of India’s best, was established in 1958 to study, conserve and preserve Himalayan fauna. Housed within the rocky and forested environment are Himalayan megafauna such as Himalayan bears, clouded leopards, red pandas and Tibetan wolves. The zoo and its attached snow leopard-breeding centre (closed to the public), are home to the world’s largest single captive population of snow leopards.


 

About 5 kms from Darjeeling, this Railway Loop is a marvelous feat of engineering. It is fascinating to watch the toy train wind its way round the 360 degree loop. The War Memorial constructed in the memory of brave sons of Darjeeling who died in different wars since 1947, is worth a visit. A glorious view of snowy peak and town can be seen from this place.

Yiga Choeling Monastery of Ghoom is one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling area built in the year 1850. This is the original or the old Ghoom Monastery. There is another monastery called Samten Choling Monastery in Ghoom which is also sometimes referred as Ghoom Monastery

Riding the Toy Train of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) has always remained a coveted experience to the tourists. Only few would let go of such an opportunity. After all this Toy Train has been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage status. Operating since 1800s and providing an important transport link to the various parts of the Himalayan hills, the Toy Train is still unmatched when it comes to absorbing the wondrous beauty of Darjeeling mountains. 

Rock garden as the name suggests, is a garden fully made out of rock. It is a marvel of present day architecture. Situated at a distance of about 12 kilometers from Darjeeling town. The garden offers a beautiful view of a hill stream cascading over rocks along the slope.
